SUMMARY:Combined Circles: Flower Power
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWEver been curious about those crazy designs you’ve seen through the years in the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs calendar and at flower shows? Many utilize surprising components\, such as hub caps\, auto parts\, and electrical conduits. These arrangements allow designers to unleash their creativity while maintaining the principles and elements of design as taught in the National Garden Clubs handbook. \nGarden Club member and Wildflower Garden Circle President Jan Sillik demonstrates some wild designs to pique your interest in this fun and fanciful program that will seek to demystify these arrangements. Sillik promises the morning will be entertaining and inspirational. \nSillik is a former president of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs (FFGC) and a life member of the National Garden Clubs (NGC)\, FFGC\, and the Deep South Garden Clubs. She serves on the FFGC’s Advisory Council\, the Long Range Planning Committee\, and as an instructor for the FFGC program series Floral Design Study. An accredited master flower show judge\, she is the founder of the Fun with Flowers program\, which she originated at the Garden Club of Jacksonville and continues to run throughout FFGC. Her designs have been featured in the Florida Arrangement Calendar numerous times\, and Sillik has exhibited designs at the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival. Previously\, she has served in numerous roles\, including the NGC Board of Directors\, editor and founder of Deep South Matters newsletter\, editor of the Creative Flower Arrangers of the Americas magazine Design Dimensions\, and nearly every leadership role at the Garden Club of Jacksonville. Sillik is a third generation native Floridian who serves as the head of the Flower Guild and a lay reader/chalice bearer at Christ Church Jacksonville Anglican. She enjoys reading\, especially biographies\, and doing crossword puzzles. \nCombined Circles is an occasional program that allows members of garden circles to meet at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for fellowship and camaraderie. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. SUMMARY:Combined Circles: Blue and Gold Star Markers
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Garden Club of Jacksonville and Wildflower Circle member Sam Runyon for a presentation about Blue Star and Gold Star Marker Memorials. \nThe Blue Star Program honors all men and women that serve in the United States Armed Services. This program began with the planting of 8\,000 dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945\, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now National Garden Clubs) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the United States\, Alaska\, and Hawaii. Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way. The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war as well as in churches and businesses. \nAmerica’s Gold Star Families is a nonprofit organization created to provide support to those who have lost a loved one in service to our country through the United States Armed Forces. Their mission is to offer honor\, hope\, and healing through remembering fallen heroes by coming together. The name Gold Star came from the custom of families of service members hanging a banner called a service flag in the window of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member in the United States Armed Forces. Blue Stars represented living service members while a Gold Star represented those who had lost their lives. NGC clubs work with Gold Star Families to honor our fallen heroes with Gold Star Markers. \nThe Garden Club of Jacksonville is currently working on refurbishing an existing Blue Star Memorial on Roosevelt Boulevard near Park Street. \nCombined Circles is an occasional program that allows members of garden circles to meet at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for fellowship and camaraderie. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom.
