SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Plant Therapy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\n\nJoin Cantrece Jones\, owner of Aura Plant Studio\, as she discusses the power of plant therapy and how you can harness nature’s healing potential. Plant therapy—or horticulture therapy—allows people to interact with plants to reduce their anxiety and feel calmer. There is a deep genetic connection that human beings have with nature that makes them feel more at ease when they are interacting with it. Bringing more plants and greenery inside your home or gardening in your yard or patio can have a dramatic effect on your wellbeing. \nCantrece Jones is the president of Acuity Design Group (ADG). She cultivated her favorite hobby into a new business\, Aura Plant Studio\, where she not only sells beautiful plants but also lends her space to others who don’t have a storefront to allow them to promote their products. Jones currently serves as a member of the American Planning Association’s Jacksonville and Atlanta Chapters. She is an active board member of the Winston Family YMCA\, Jacksonville Humane Society\, Jacksonville Community Land Trust\, the Cathedral District\, and the HCA Market Advisory Board. Additionally\, she conducts marketing strategies and branding workshops for entrepreneurs through the Small Business Administration\, the city of Jacksonville\, Broward County\, and more. Jones has a bachelor’s degree in communications and graphic design from the University of North Florida. She has lived and worked in the Jacksonville area for more than 20 years. Her military upbringing has allowed her to travel and live in many places around the globe. She enjoys cycling\, gardening\, and traveling with her husband (and her two fur babies). \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. You will receive the Zoom link when you register. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \n\n\nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Rain Gardens
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Daria Wicks as she shares ways to rescue the rain by creating a beautiful\, beneficial garden that purifies toxic runoff. She will discuss the benefits of a rain garden\, as well as a few fundamental build instructions. \nA rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof\, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials\, rain gardens can be a cost-effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies\, song birds\, and other wildlife. \nDaria Wicks is a recently retired pharmaceutical researcher whose career focus has been on wellbeing\, both our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our environment. During the last year to 18 months\, she has worked to identify cost-efficient ways to improve our immediate surroundings and contribute to the wellbeing of our waterways. Through this work\, she became interested in rain gardens as a way to enhance our surroundings and contribute to the improvement of our waterways. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Let It Rain
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Master Gardener Volunteer Evie Pankok to learn the who\, what\, why\, when\, where\, and how of rain barrels. Rain barrels are a great way to reduce stormwater runoff and to save water for a dry spell. \nRain barrels capture water and hold it for later use such as on lawns\, gardens\, or indoor plants. Collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It’s a great way to conserve water\, and it’s free water for use in your landscape. \nEvie will provide guidance on how to build your own rain barrel with some basic supplies and a few simple steps. \nEvie Pankok is a master gardener volunteer in Duval County whose specialty is environmentally friendly landscapes. She recently retired from the Duval County Extension Office where she served many years as a horticulture agent and then as a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program assistant. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Throwing Shade
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWIf you think nothing pretty grows in the shade\, you’re playing the wrong game. Join Master Gardener Juliet Johnson as she explains how color\, texture\, and movement can delight the eye in a shade garden while offering respite to a weary soul. Shade gardens are where we gardeners can spread our wings creatively. They can be good fun and extremely successful without blowing the budget—especially in our USDA zone of 9A\, where the propagation is easy! \nJuliet Johnson has killed more plants than the average Floridian. She has learned through expensive experience how to garden far away from her native United Kingdom. She is eternally grateful to the University of Florida and the Duval County Extension Office for their wisdom and patience as she has slowly learned how to create lush\, exciting garden spaces. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Mad for Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Tim Armstrong of Eat Your Yard Jax as he empowers you to grow your own backyard mushrooms. Armstrong has studied the varieties that grow best in Northeast Florida and shares his extensive experience gained from training programs around the country. Learn how to grow varieties like shiitake and oyster mushrooms and the seasons when they grow best. \nEat Your Yard Jax is a family-run farm specializing in edible landscape and garden plants and practicing organic principles and sustainable agriculture. The farm uses composting\, vermiculture\, rainwater reclamation\, aquaponics\, chicken production for a manure source\, and mushroom production from waste wood reclamation as part of its sustainable practices. \nArmstrong’s family has lived in North Florida since Florida became a state. They operated a trading post\, post office\, and steamboat stop on the Apalachicola River for almost 100 years. Armstrong grew up on Jacksonville’s westside and worked in several nurseries as a young man. He returned to the nursery business in 2007. After he met the folks at the Beaches Green Market\, he expanded the edible component of his business. He enjoyed sharing the market experience with his children and hearing stories of urban agriculture success—and failure—from customers. After volunteering at the North Florida School of Special Education’s gardens\, Armstrong studied at Growing Power in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, with Will Allen. The training helped Berry Good Farms to grow out of NFSSE’s small garden into the microbusiness training model it is today. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. SUMMARY:Combined Circles: Flower Power
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWEver been curious about those crazy designs you’ve seen through the years in the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs calendar and at flower shows? Many utilize surprising components\, such as hub caps\, auto parts\, and electrical conduits. These arrangements allow designers to unleash their creativity while maintaining the principles and elements of design as taught in the National Garden Clubs handbook. \nGarden Club member and Wildflower Garden Circle President Jan Sillik demonstrates some wild designs to pique your interest in this fun and fanciful program that will seek to demystify these arrangements. She serves on the FFGC’s Advisory Council\, the Long Range Planning Committee\, and as an instructor for the FFGC program series Floral Design Study. An accredited master flower show judge\, she is the founder of the Fun with Flowers program\, which she originated at the Garden Club of Jacksonville and continues to run throughout FFGC. Her designs have been featured in the Florida Arrangement Calendar numerous times\, and Sillik has exhibited designs at the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival. Previously\, she has served in numerous roles\, including the NGC Board of Directors\, editor and founder of Deep South Matters newsletter\, editor of the Creative Flower Arrangers of the Americas magazine Design Dimensions\, and nearly every leadership role at the Garden Club of Jacksonville. Sillik is a third generation native Floridian who serves as the head of the Flower Guild and a lay reader/chalice bearer at Christ Church Jacksonville Anglican. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Grow Your Own Park
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWDuval Audubon Society\, Northeast Florida Sierra Club\, the Ixia Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society\, and the Garden Club of Jacksonville partner for a special Horticulture Corner program with Doug Tallamy of the Homegrown National Park project\, an effort to create 20 million acres of native plantings in yards and communities across the United States. \nThese four organizations are joining together to encourage people in Northeast Florida to sign up their yards for the Homegrown National Park challenge. They will suggest sets of native plants for different conditions\, such as sunny\, shady\, or dry\, and provide handouts with helpful information. Dr. Tallamy will give a presentation by Zoom which will be followed by an in-person introduction to easy to grow native plants with representatives from Duval Audubon\, Ixia Chapter of FNPS\, and Northeast Florida Sierra Club. \nArrive at 5:30 p.m. to visit tables representing each organization and learn how you can get involved. The program begins at 6 p.m. \nNative Plant Sale\nThere will be a native plant sale at the event to help people get started on native plantings in their own yards. \nAbout Doug Tallamy and the Homegrown National Park project\nDr. Tallamy founded Homegrown National Park along with Michelle Alfandari as a grass-roots call to action to regenerate biodiversity\, catalyzing a collective effort of individual homeowners\, property owners\, land managers\, farmers\, and anyone with some soil to start a new habitat by planting native plants and removing most invasive plants. It is the largest cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted.“Our National Parks\, no matter how grand in scale are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed\,” Tallamy says. “Thus\, the concept for Homegrown National Park\, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work\, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze\, extending national parks to our yards and communities.” \nThe Homegrown National Park website features an interactive map that shows each person’s contribution to planting native by state\, county\, and zip code. You can add your yard to this map! \nDr. Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book “Bringing Nature Home” was awarded the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers’ Association. “Nature’s Best Hope\,” a New York Times Best Seller\, was released in February 2020\, and his latest book “The Nature of Oaks” was released by Timber press in March 2021. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation\, the Tom Dodd Jr. Award of Excellence\, the 2018 AHS B.Y. Morrison Communication Award\, and the 2019 Cynthia Westcott Scientific Writing Award. \nIn-person and on Zoom\nThis program will be offered simultaneously in-person at the Garden Club and on Zoom. SUMMARY:Combined Circles: Blue and Gold Star Markers
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Garden Club of Jacksonville and Wildflower Circle member Sam Runyon for a presentation about Blue Star and Gold Star Marker Memorials. \nThe Blue Star Program honors all men and women that serve in the United States Armed Services. This program began with the planting of 8\,000 dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945\, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now National Garden Clubs) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the United States\, Alaska\, and Hawaii. Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way. The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war as well as in churches and businesses. \nAmerica’s Gold Star Families is a nonprofit organization created to provide support to those who have lost a loved one in service to our country through the United States Armed Forces. Their mission is to offer honor\, hope\, and healing through remembering fallen heroes by coming together. The name Gold Star came from the custom of families of service members hanging a banner called a service flag in the window of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member in the United States Armed Forces. Blue Stars represented living service members while a Gold Star represented those who had lost their lives. NGC clubs work with Gold Star Families to honor our fallen heroes with Gold Star Markers. \nThe Garden Club of Jacksonville is currently working on refurbishing an existing Blue Star Memorial on Roosevelt Boulevard near Park Street. \nCombined Circles is an occasional program that allows members of garden circles to meet at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for fellowship and camaraderie. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. SUMMARY:Designer of Distinction: Ashley Woodson Bailey
DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed floral designer\, photographer\, and artist\, Ashley Woodson Bailey for the 2021 Designer of Distinction at the Garden Club of Jacksonville. During this program\, Ashley will create several original floral designs\, then photograph them and describe the process she uses for creating the breathtaking patterns she applies to fabric\, wallpaper\, fine art prints\, and products of all kinds. \nAfter a harrowing car accident left her bed-ridden with a broken back and shattered spirit\, Ashley channeled her love of flowers into a healing new venture filled with beauty\, depth\, and exquisite curiosity. A self-taught photographer\, Ashley’s signature “florography” art prints launched in 2014. Her eponymous brand naturally expanded to include wallpapers\, fabrics\, and limited-edition products as her desire to live among the flowers grew.
