SUMMARY:Combined Circles: Flower Power
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWEver been curious about those crazy designs you’ve seen through the years in the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs calendar and at flower shows? Many utilize surprising components\, such as hub caps\, auto parts\, and electrical conduits. These arrangements allow designers to unleash their creativity while maintaining the principles and elements of design as taught in the National Garden Clubs handbook. \nGarden Club member and Wildflower Garden Circle President Jan Sillik demonstrates some wild designs to pique your interest in this fun and fanciful program that will seek to demystify these arrangements. Sillik promises the morning will be entertaining and inspirational. \nSillik is a former president of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs (FFGC) and a life member of the National Garden Clubs (NGC)\, FFGC\, and the Deep South Garden Clubs. She serves on the FFGC’s Advisory Council\, the Long Range Planning Committee\, and as an instructor for the FFGC program series Floral Design Study. An accredited master flower show judge\, she is the founder of the Fun with Flowers program\, which she originated at the Garden Club of Jacksonville and continues to run throughout FFGC. Her designs have been featured in the Florida Arrangement Calendar numerous times\, and Sillik has exhibited designs at the EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival. Previously\, she has served in numerous roles\, including the NGC Board of Directors\, editor and founder of Deep South Matters newsletter\, editor of the Creative Flower Arrangers of the Americas magazine Design Dimensions\, and nearly every leadership role at the Garden Club of Jacksonville. Sillik is a third generation native Floridian who serves as the head of the Flower Guild and a lay reader/chalice bearer at Christ Church Jacksonville Anglican. She enjoys reading\, especially biographies\, and doing crossword puzzles. \nCombined Circles is an occasional program that allows members of garden circles to meet at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for fellowship and camaraderie. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. COVID-19 precautions will be outlined closer to the event. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Grow Your Own Park
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWDuval Audubon Society\, Northeast Florida Sierra Club\, the Ixia Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society\, and the Garden Club of Jacksonville partner for a special Horticulture Corner program with Doug Tallamy of the Homegrown National Park project\, an effort to create 20 million acres of native plantings in yards and communities across the United States. \nThese four organizations are joining together to encourage people in Northeast Florida to sign up their yards for the Homegrown National Park challenge. They will suggest sets of native plants for different conditions\, such as sunny\, shady\, or dry\, and provide handouts with helpful information. Dr. Tallamy will give a presentation by Zoom which will be followed by an in-person introduction to easy to grow native plants with representatives from Duval Audubon\, Ixia Chapter of FNPS\, and Northeast Florida Sierra Club. \nArrive at 5:30 p.m. to visit tables representing each organization and learn how you can get involved. The program begins at 6 p.m. \nNative Plant Sale\nThere will be a native plant sale at the event to help people get started on native plantings in their own yards. \nAbout Doug Tallamy and the Homegrown National Park project\nDr. Tallamy founded Homegrown National Park along with Michelle Alfandari as a grass-roots call to action to regenerate biodiversity\, catalyzing a collective effort of individual homeowners\, property owners\, land managers\, farmers\, and anyone with some soil to start a new habitat by planting native plants and removing most invasive plants. It is the largest cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted.“Our National Parks\, no matter how grand in scale are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed\,” Tallamy says. “Thus\, the concept for Homegrown National Park\, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work\, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze\, extending national parks to our yards and communities.” \nThe Homegrown National Park website features an interactive map that shows each person’s contribution to planting native by state\, county\, and zip code. You can add your yard to this map! \nDr. Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book “Bringing Nature Home” was awarded the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers’ Association. “Nature’s Best Hope\,” a New York Times Best Seller\, was released in February 2020\, and his latest book “The Nature of Oaks” was released by Timber press in March 2021. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation\, the Tom Dodd Jr. Award of Excellence\, the 2018 AHS B.Y. Morrison Communication Award\, and the 2019 Cynthia Westcott Scientific Writing Award. \nIn-person and on Zoom\nThis program will be offered simultaneously in-person at the Garden Club and on Zoom. COVID-19 health and safety precautions will be practiced during the event and will be outlined closer to the event. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Combined Circles: Blue and Gold Star Markers
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Garden Club of Jacksonville and Wildflower Circle member Sam Runyon for a presentation about Blue Star and Gold Star Marker Memorials. \nThe Blue Star Program honors all men and women that serve in the United States Armed Services. This program began with the planting of 8\,000 dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945\, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now National Garden Clubs) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the United States\, Alaska\, and Hawaii. Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way. The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war as well as in churches and businesses. \nAmerica’s Gold Star Families is a nonprofit organization created to provide support to those who have lost a loved one in service to our country through the United States Armed Forces. Their mission is to offer honor\, hope\, and healing through remembering fallen heroes by coming together. The name Gold Star came from the custom of families of service members hanging a banner called a service flag in the window of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member in the United States Armed Forces. Blue Stars represented living service members while a Gold Star represented those who had lost their lives. NGC clubs work with Gold Star Families to honor our fallen heroes with Gold Star Markers. \nThe Garden Club of Jacksonville is currently working on refurbishing an existing Blue Star Memorial on Roosevelt Boulevard near Park Street. \nCombined Circles is an occasional program that allows members of garden circles to meet at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for fellowship and camaraderie. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. Masks are required for those attending the event in-person to help protect the speaker. \nFree for Garden Club members | $5 for nonmembers \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Vertical Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Learn how vertical gardening is the most sustainable way to grow your own produce in the convenience of your own home. \nJoAnne Krestul began growing vertically six years ago\, and providing her family with good nutrition with the ease of aeroponic gardening has truly become her passion. Aeroponic garden systems grow a wide variety of fruits\, vegetables\, herbs\, and flowers without the learning curve or time commitment of traditional gardening. This type of gardening system grows plants with 90 percent less water\, 90 percent less space\, and only uses water and nutrients rather than soil. Krestul will share how easy the vertical garden system is to assemble\, how it works\, and the many foods you can enjoy grown conveniently and sustainably on your own patio\, deck\, or inside your home. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. Seating at the Garden Club is limited\, so register today. COVID-19 health and safety guidelines will be practiced during this event. Seating in the Ballroom will be socially distanced\, and attendees must wear masks throughout the entire program. \nFree and open to the public \nREGISTER NOW
