SUMMARY:Combined Circles: Blue and Gold Star Markers
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Garden Club of Jacksonville and Wildflower Circle member Sam Runyon for a presentation about Blue Star and Gold Star Marker Memorials. \nThe Blue Star Program honors all men and women that serve in the United States Armed Services. This program began with the planting of 8\,000 dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945\, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now National Garden Clubs) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the United States\, Alaska\, and Hawaii. Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way. The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war as well as in churches and businesses. \nAmerica’s Gold Star Families is a nonprofit organization created to provide support to those who have lost a loved one in service to our country through the United States Armed Forces. Their mission is to offer honor\, hope\, and healing through remembering fallen heroes by coming together. The name Gold Star came from the custom of families of service members hanging a banner called a service flag in the window of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member in the United States Armed Forces. Blue Stars represented living service members while a Gold Star represented those who had lost their lives. NGC clubs work with Gold Star Families to honor our fallen heroes with Gold Star Markers. \nThe Garden Club of Jacksonville is currently working on refurbishing an existing Blue Star Memorial on Roosevelt Boulevard near Park Street. \nCombined Circles is an occasional program that allows members of garden circles to meet at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for fellowship and camaraderie. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. Masks are required for those attending the event in-person to help protect the speaker. \nFree for Garden Club members | $5 for nonmembers \nREGISTER NOW

Haley is the Governance Chair of the Garden Club of Jacksonville’s Board of Trustees\, a member of the Late Bloomers Garden Club\, and a 2019 National Garden Club of America Medalist for outstanding achievement in the field of floral design education. \nFlower shows have been around for hundreds of years and are popular forms of entertainment and education for exhibitors and visitors. SUMMARY:Flower Show Series: Designing the Perfect Table
DESCRIPTION:Join floral designer Laura Haley as she demonstrates eye-popping table settings as examples of what can be entered in flower shows. The emphasis of most flower shows is to showcase horticultural specimens\, floral design creativity\, and conservation or environmental stewardship. A flower show’s rules and guidelines are presented in a schedule with the various subject divisions consisting of classes or categories of competition. \nIn the floral design division of a flower show\, the class titles become the source of inspiration and interpretation.. The class description may also specify a particular design type\, such table design. During this program\, Haley will demonstrate the difference between functional and exhibition table classes that one might see at a flower show. \nRegister today for this Zoom program at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday\, February 9. This virtual program is free\, but you must register. Once you do\, we’ll send you the link\, so you can join the meeting. \nLearn more about the Garden Club’s virtual programs here. \nFREE \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Vertical Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Learn how vertical gardening is the most sustainable way to grow your own produce in the convenience of your own home. \nJoAnne Krestul began growing vertically six years ago\, and providing her family with good nutrition with the ease of aeroponic gardening has truly become her passion. Aeroponic garden systems grow a wide variety of fruits\, vegetables\, herbs\, and flowers without the learning curve or time commitment of traditional gardening. This type of gardening system grows plants with 90 percent less water\, 90 percent less space\, and only uses water and nutrients rather than soil. Krestul will share how easy the vertical garden system is to assemble\, how it works\, and the many foods you can enjoy grown conveniently and sustainably on your own patio\, deck\, or inside your home. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. Seating at the Garden Club is limited\, so register today. COVID-19 health and safety guidelines will be practiced during this event. Seating in the Ballroom will be socially distanced\, and attendees must wear masks throughout the entire program. \nFree and open to the public \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Tim Armstrong of Eat Your Yard Jax discusses how you can raise mushrooms at home. Armstrong has studied the varieties that grow best in Northeast Florida and shares his extensive experience gained from training programs around the country. Learn how to grow varieties like shiitake and oyster mushrooms and the seasons when they grow best. \nEat Your Yard Jax is a family-run farm specializing in edible landscape and garden plants and practicing organic principles and sustainable agriculture. The farm uses composting\, vermiculture\, rainwater reclamation\, aquaponics\, chicken production for a manure source\, and mushroom production from waste wood reclamation as part of its sustainable practices. \nArmstrong’s family has lived in North Florida since Florida became a state. They operated a trading post\, post office\, and steamboat stop on the Apalachicola River for almost 100 years. Armstrong grew up on Jacksonville’s westside and worked in several nurseries as a young man. He returned to the nursery business in 2007. After he met the folks at the Beaches Green Market\, he expanded the edible component of his business. He enjoyed sharing the market experience with his children and hearing stories of urban agriculture success—and failure—from customers. After volunteering at the North Florida School of Special Education’s gardens\, Armstrong studied at Growing Power in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, with Will Allen. The training helped Berry Good Farms to grow out of NFSSE’s small garden into the microbusiness training model it is today. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. SUMMARY:Make Your Garden a Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to attract butterflies and other forms of life to your garden? #GardenClubJax joins Bill Berthet\, the 2019 winner of the St. Johns Riverkeeper’s Best River-friendly Wildlife Habitat Yard award\, for a tour of the incredible environment he has created to attract living creatures. Learn how you can provide the best foundation for trees\, bushes\, plants\, and vines to attract Northeast Florida pollinators and blooming times throughout the year to maximize their visits. \nBerthet has dedicated much of his life to learning and traveling the world to see butterflies. He’s documented 64 different butterfly species in his yard situated on Julington Creek. He recently revised his 72-page guide packed with valuable information about bees\, wasps\, and 28 species of butterflies\, including several pages about what might be killing caterpillars in your garden. \nRegister today for the program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday\, August 11. SUMMARY:A Garden to Remember
DESCRIPTION:#GardenClubJax joins the people raising support for the Centennial Garden at Historic Willow Branch Park. Richard Ceriello\, president of the AIDS Memorial Project of Northeast Florida\, has been working to improve the park for several years. His organization has planted trees in the park to commemorate those who died of HIV/AIDS. Now they have a plan for a lush garden featuring native plantings in addition to public art and reforestation. \nHe and Theresa Parlato formed the Plant Parenthood Facebook group with a focus on developing and celebrating gardening arts among members of the Jacksonville LGBTQ community. They’ve been working with landscape architect Scott Dowman and D. Scott Fraser of Design Development Architecture on the long-term plans for Willow Branch Park. \nRegister today for the program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday\, July 14. This virtual program is free\, but you must register. Once you do\, we’ll send you the link\, so you can join the meeting. \nSupport the Centennial Garden by attending the Car Wash on July 11. \nLearn more about the Garden Club’s virtual programs here. \nFREE \nREGISTRATION

SUMMARY:A Different Kind of Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:People approach landscaping in many different ways depending on their circumstances. In the case of Shawana Brooks\, development director at Jacksonville Arts & Music School\, and visual artist Roosevelt Watson III\, they came up with an ingenious way to dress up their yard and communicate with neighbors and the public-at-large. As renters\, they wanted something flexible that also spoke to their artistic and creative sensibilities. Also\, their house is situated one block from a Superfund site where hazardous waste contaminated the area\, making growing their own food risky for their family’s health. \nTogether\, they created the 6 Ft. Away Gallery\, a pop-up public art space created by Brooks in response to the pandemic and the lack of opportunities for African-American artists. The gallery features Watson’s “Waymaker” series honoring the legacy of local and national contributions of lesser-known African-Americans and their allies. \nRegister today for the program at 6 p.m. Tuesday\, June 30. Once you do\, we’ll send you the link\, so you can join the meeting. \nLearn more about the Garden Club’s virtual programs here. \nFREE \nREGISTRATION
