SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Light My Fire
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\n\nREGISTRATIONS BEGIN OCTOBER 1\, 2024 \nNorth Florida Land Trust (NFLT) has protected more than 38\,000 acres\, and through land stewardship restores and maintains the more than 14\,000 acres it manages\, creating ideal habitats benefiting both wildlife and vegetation. Using “prescribed burns\,” NFLT can optimally maintain these land tracts for the benefit of conservation. \nA prescribed burn is a planned fire used to meet land management objectives. The “prescription” is a set of conditions that considers the safety of the public and fire staff\, weather\, and probability of meeting the burn objectives. Every fire has a prescription prepared in advance which describes its objectives\, fuels\, size\, the precise environmental conditions under which it will burn\, and conditions under which it may be suppressed. \nNFLT has a dedicated expert stewardship team that manages such prescribed burns. Hear from NFLT CEO Allison DeFoor and Land Stewardship Director Rianna Elliott about the ways in which precious land in North Florida is protected and managed. \nThe Rev. Cn. Allison DeFoor is a seventh-generation Floridian who serves as North Florida Land Trust president and CEO. Dr. DeFoor has been actively engaged in conservation as a trustee of the Florida Audubon Society\, the Florida Land Trust Association\, and 1\,000 Friends of Florida. In addition\, he was Florida’s Everglades Czar\, and in 2014\, he co-chaired the passage of Amendment 1\, which passed with 70 percent of the vote in Florida and authorized the most significant land protection efforts in world history. \nDeFoor is also an Episcopal priest who has served as Canon to the Ordinary to the Bishop of the Diocese of Florida. Dr. DeFoor\, who has degrees in law\, criminology\, and theology\, previously served parishes in four prisons around Tallahassee and was an assistant at Grace Mission\, an inner-city mission. \nHis background in criminal justice includes having been a prosecutor\, public defender\, judge\, and the elected Sheriff of Monroe County. \nIn addition\, Dr. DeFoor served as a law professor at the University of Miami\, a member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar\, and a trustee of numerous boards\, including the Florida Chamber Foundation\, Florida Historical Society\, Associated Industries of Florida\, and Florida Tax Watch. In 1990\, Dr. DeFoor ran for Lieutenant Governor of Florida as Governor Bob Martinez’s running mate. Upon moving to Jacksonville in 2015\, he was invited twice to become a member of The Florida Times-Union newspaper editorial board. In Jacksonville\, he has served on the boards of Operation New Hope\, the Jacksonville Historical Society\, Memorial Park Association\, and the FSCJ Foundation. Dr. DeFoor recently graduated from the Nonprofit Executive Program (NPEP) at the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State University and he currently serves as a trustee with the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. \n\nRianna Elliott joined NFLT in 2021 and serves as the director of land wtewardship. She oversees the stewardship department and will be responsible for the management\, restoration and maintenance of NFLT’s preserves and conservation easements. Her duties include a supervisory role of the stewardship department and the direct implementation of certain program areas. She also serves on the leadership team and contributes to the nonprofit’s organizational development and strategic decision-making. \nRianna comes to NFLT with more than a decade of experience with the Florida Park Service. As a park services specialist\, she focused most of her energy on resource management and prescribed fire. Over time\, she achieved her certified prescribed burn manager status as well as other certifications to enable her to better preserve the lands she was charged with restoring and protecting. She has also assisted multiple agencies with prescribed fire through trainings and knowledge exchanges over the years. Prior to her work with Florida Park Service\, Rianna spent several years with a non-profit organization working with at-risk youth. \n\nThe program is free and open to the public\, but registration is required so the Garden Club knows how many chairs to provide. She cultivated her favorite hobby into a new business\, Aura Plant Studio\, where she not only sells beautiful plants but also lends her space to others who don’t have a storefront to allow them to promote their products. Jones currently serves as a member of the American Planning Association’s Jacksonville and Atlanta Chapters. She is an active board member of the Winston Family YMCA\, Jacksonville Humane Society\, Jacksonville Community Land Trust\, the Cathedral District\, and the HCA Market Advisory Board. Additionally\, she conducts marketing strategies and branding workshops for entrepreneurs through the Small Business Administration\, the city of Jacksonville\, Broward County\, and more. Jones has a bachelor’s degree in communications and graphic design from the University of North Florida. She has lived and worked in the Jacksonville area for more than 20 years. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Rain Gardens
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Daria Wicks as she shares ways to rescue the rain by creating a beautiful\, beneficial garden that purifies toxic runoff. She will discuss the benefits of a rain garden\, as well as a few fundamental build instructions. \nA rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof\, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials\, rain gardens can be a cost-effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies\, song birds\, and other wildlife. \nDaria Wicks is a recently retired pharmaceutical researcher whose career focus has been on wellbeing\, both our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our environment. During the last year to 18 months\, she has worked to identify cost-efficient ways to improve our immediate surroundings and contribute to the wellbeing of our waterways. Through this work\, she became interested in rain gardens as a way to enhance our surroundings and contribute to the improvement of our waterways. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Let It Rain
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Master Gardener Volunteer Evie Pankok to learn the who\, what\, why\, when\, where\, and how of rain barrels. Rain barrels are a great way to reduce stormwater runoff and to save water for a dry spell. \nRain barrels capture water and hold it for later use such as on lawns\, gardens\, or indoor plants. Collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It’s a great way to conserve water\, and it’s free water for use in your landscape. \nEvie will provide guidance on how to build your own rain barrel with some basic supplies and a few simple steps. \nEvie Pankok is a master gardener volunteer in Duval County whose specialty is environmentally friendly landscapes. She recently retired from the Duval County Extension Office where she served many years as a horticulture agent and then as a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program assistant. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

Shade gardens are where we gardeners can spread our wings creatively. They can be good fun and extremely successful without blowing the budget—especially in our USDA zone of 9A\, where the propagation is easy! \nJuliet Johnson has killed more plants than the average Floridian. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Mad for Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Tim Armstrong of Eat Your Yard Jax as he empowers you to grow your own backyard mushrooms. Armstrong has studied the varieties that grow best in Northeast Florida and shares his extensive experience gained from training programs around the country. Learn how to grow varieties like shiitake and oyster mushrooms and the seasons when they grow best. \nEat Your Yard Jax is a family-run farm specializing in edible landscape and garden plants and practicing organic principles and sustainable agriculture. The farm uses composting\, vermiculture\, rainwater reclamation\, aquaponics\, chicken production for a manure source\, and mushroom production from waste wood reclamation as part of its sustainable practices. \nArmstrong’s family has lived in North Florida since Florida became a state. They operated a trading post\, post office\, and steamboat stop on the Apalachicola River for almost 100 years. Armstrong grew up on Jacksonville’s westside and worked in several nurseries as a young man. He returned to the nursery business in 2007. After he met the folks at the Beaches Green Market\, he expanded the edible component of his business. He enjoyed sharing the market experience with his children and hearing stories of urban agriculture success—and failure—from customers. After volunteering at the North Florida School of Special Education’s gardens\, Armstrong studied at Growing Power in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, with Will Allen. The training helped Berry Good Farms to grow out of NFSSE’s small garden into the microbusiness training model it is today. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. Masks are optional for those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 but are recommended to help protect everyone.
