SUMMARY:Budding Gardeners: CleanUp Jax
DESCRIPTION:RESERVE YOUR SPACE\n\nJoin the Garden Club of Jacksonville and Riverside Avondale Preservation on National CleanUp Day. Children and their families join this national effort to keep the outdoors clean. As a group\, children and their parents will safely pick up litter along Post Street and Riverside Avenue. This special Budding Gardeners starts at the Garden Club at 9 a.m. and continues until 11 a.m. Refreshments will be served at the Garden Club at 11 a.m. \n\n\nAccording to National CleanUp Day\, many studies show that someone will pick up litter is if they witness someone else picking up litter. That’s because peer group norms are more powerful than incentives\, and together\, they can provide impressive behavioral change. Most people want to do the right thing; all they need is a little encouragement or incentive. The leadership of National CleanUp Day believes people are naturally responsible; if we encourage them to care for their favorite places\, to pick up after themselves and others\, then our outdoor spaces will become self-sufficient\, clean\, and more enjoyable. \nEveryone participating in Budding Gardeners: CleanUp Jax is required to wear closed shoes and protective clothing. \nBudding Gardeners is aimed at children in grades 1-6 to discover gardening\, conservation\, and wildlife through interactive programs\, crafts\, and outdoor projects. Children and their parents or caregivers collaborate during a morning of healthy and fun activities. \nEach registration includes one parent and child. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but please register in advance\, so we know how many people to expect. \n\n\nGreat volunteer opportunity: Sign up here! \n\nFind other National CleanUp Day events in Riversdie-Avondale here. \n\nRESERVE YOUR SPACE

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Plant Therapy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\n\nJoin Cantrece Jones\, owner of Aura Plant Studio\, as she discusses the power of plant therapy and how you can harness nature’s healing potential. Plant therapy—or horticulture therapy—allows people to interact with plants to reduce their anxiety and feel calmer. There is a deep genetic connection that human beings have with nature that makes them feel more at ease when they are interacting with it. Bringing more plants and greenery inside your home or gardening in your yard or patio can have a dramatic effect on your wellbeing. \nCantrece Jones is the president of Acuity Design Group (ADG). She cultivated her favorite hobby into a new business\, Aura Plant Studio\, where she not only sells beautiful plants but also lends her space to others who don’t have a storefront to allow them to promote their products. Jones currently serves as a member of the American Planning Association’s Jacksonville and Atlanta Chapters. She is an active board member of the Winston Family YMCA\, Jacksonville Humane Society\, Jacksonville Community Land Trust\, the Cathedral District\, and the HCA Market Advisory Board. Additionally\, she conducts marketing strategies and branding workshops for entrepreneurs through the Small Business Administration\, the city of Jacksonville\, Broward County\, and more. Jones has a bachelor’s degree in communications and graphic design from the University of North Florida. She has lived and worked in the Jacksonville area for more than 20 years. Her military upbringing has allowed her to travel and live in many places around the globe. She enjoys cycling\, gardening\, and traveling with her husband (and her two fur babies). \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. SUMMARY:Blue Zones Project Kick-off
DESCRIPTION:REGISTERThe Garden Club of Jacksonville is proud to support the Blue Zones Project\, a comprehensive approach to making our community a place where people live better\, longer with a higher quality of life. Come see us on June 3 at 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and learn how we’re supporting a healthier Jacksonville! We will a have couple of fun activities for children and some giveaways for all ages. \nBecause healthier environments naturally nudge people toward healthier choices\, the Blue Zones Project focuses on influencing the Life Radius®—the area close to home in which people spend 90 percent of their lives. Blue Zones Project best practices use people\, places\, and policy as levers to transform those surroundings. \nSeveral Blue Zones Project goals align with the #GardenClubJax mission: \n\nMove Naturally: The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron\, run marathons or join gyms. Instead\, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it. They grow gardens and don’t have mechanical conveniences for house and yard work.\nPlant Slant: Beans\, including fava\, black\, soy and lentils\, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat—mostly pork—is eaten on average only five times per month. Serving sizes are 3-4 oz.\, about the size of a deck of cards.\nRight Tribe: The world’s longest lived people chose–or were born into–social circles that supported healthy behaviors\, Okinawans created “moais”–groups of five friends that committed to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies shows that smoking\, obesity\, happiness\, and even loneliness are contagious. So the social networks of long-lived people have favorably shaped their health behaviors.\n\nWe hope to see you at this great event! \nGreat volunteer opportunity: Sign-up here! \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Rain Gardens
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Daria Wicks as she shares ways to rescue the rain by creating a beautiful\, beneficial garden that purifies toxic runoff. She will discuss the benefits of a rain garden\, as well as a few fundamental build instructions. \nA rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof\, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials\, rain gardens can be a cost-effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies\, song birds\, and other wildlife. \nDaria Wicks is a recently retired pharmaceutical researcher whose career focus has been on wellbeing\, both our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our environment. During the last year to 18 months\, she has worked to identify cost-efficient ways to improve our immediate surroundings and contribute to the wellbeing of our waterways. Through this work\, she became interested in rain gardens as a way to enhance our surroundings and contribute to the improvement of our waterways. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Let It Rain
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Master Gardener Volunteer Evie Pankok to learn the who\, what\, why\, when\, where\, and how of rain barrels. Rain barrels are a great way to reduce stormwater runoff and to save water for a dry spell. \nRain barrels capture water and hold it for later use such as on lawns\, gardens\, or indoor plants. Collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It’s a great way to conserve water\, and it’s free water for use in your landscape. \nEvie will provide guidance on how to build your own rain barrel with some basic supplies and a few simple steps. \nEvie Pankok is a master gardener volunteer in Duval County whose specialty is environmentally friendly landscapes. She recently retired from the Duval County Extension Office where she served many years as a horticulture agent and then as a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program assistant. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW
