SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Rain Gardens
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Daria Wicks as she shares ways to rescue the rain by creating a beautiful\, beneficial garden that purifies toxic runoff. She will discuss the benefits of a rain garden\, as well as a few fundamental build instructions. \nA rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof\, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials\, rain gardens can be a cost-effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies\, song birds\, and other wildlife. \nDaria Wicks is a recently retired pharmaceutical researcher whose career focus has been on wellbeing\, both our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our environment. During the last year to 18 months\, she has worked to identify cost-efficient ways to improve our immediate surroundings and contribute to the wellbeing of our waterways. Through this work\, she became interested in rain gardens as a way to enhance our surroundings and contribute to the improvement of our waterways. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Let It Rain
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Master Gardener Volunteer Evie Pankok to learn the who\, what\, why\, when\, where\, and how of rain barrels. Rain barrels are a great way to reduce stormwater runoff and to save water for a dry spell. \nRain barrels capture water and hold it for later use such as on lawns\, gardens\, or indoor plants. Collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It’s a great way to conserve water\, and it’s free water for use in your landscape. \nEvie will provide guidance on how to build your own rain barrel with some basic supplies and a few simple steps. \nEvie Pankok is a master gardener volunteer in Duval County whose specialty is environmentally friendly landscapes. She recently retired from the Duval County Extension Office where she served many years as a horticulture agent and then as a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program assistant. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Budding Gardeners: Terrarium Treasures
DESCRIPTION:RESERVE YOUR SPACE\n\nJoin Master Gardener Angela Holliman as she discusses one fun way to get into gardening—making terrariums! A terrarium is a miniature garden grown inside a container and perfect way to enjoy plant life in a small space. It’s also an excellent tool for learning about the water cycle as it demonstrates evaporation\, condensation\, and precipitation. Children will make their own terrariums to take home and enjoy! \nThis Budding Gardeners program is sponsored by the Wildflower Garden Circle. \nBudding Gardeners is aimed at children in grades 1-6 to discover gardening\, conservation\, and wildlife through interactive programs\, crafts\, and outdoor projects. Children and their parents or caregivers collaborate during a morning of healthy and fun activities. A snack in sealed packaging will be served. \nThe program is free for members and only $5 for nonmembers\, but space is limited. Registration is required\, so we know how many supplies to provide. Please call 904-355-4224 if your child cannot attend\, so we can allow those on the waiting list to take part. \nBecome a member today and get a BIG discount! \n\nEach registration includes one parent and child. \n\nFree for Garden Club members | $5 for nonmembers \nGreat volunteer opportunity: Sign up here! \n\n\nRESERVE YOUR SPACE

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Wild for Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Master Gardener Mary Longanbach as she discusses how to grow wildflowers in your landscape using the Florida-Friendly Landscaping principle of “Right Plant\, Right Place.” Florida’s native wildflowers will bring a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes to your landscape. They can take the heat\, thrive in humidity\, require little maintenance\, and come back year after year. Wildflowers help save the bees\, support native wildlife\, or and help you enjoy the sense of place that native plants offer. \nMary Longanbach grew up on a farm in Ohio and has always had her hands in the dirt. Mary grew up cultivating vegetables in her family plot and has kept that tradition throughout her life. She has created and maintained productive vegetable and ornamental gardens in climates as varied as California\, Connecticut\, and West Virginia. She has been a Master Gardener for more than twenty years with sixteen years in Duval County. She enjoys travel\, family\, and sharing her knowledge of gardening with members of her community. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Throwing Shade
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWIf you think nothing pretty grows in the shade\, you’re playing the wrong game. Join Master Gardener Juliet Johnson as she explains how color\, texture\, and movement can delight the eye in a shade garden while offering respite to a weary soul. Shade gardens are where we gardeners can spread our wings creatively. They can be good fun and extremely successful without blowing the budget—especially in our USDA zone of 9A\, where the propagation is easy! \nJuliet Johnson has killed more plants than the average Floridian. She has learned through expensive experience how to garden far away from her native United Kingdom. She is eternally grateful to the University of Florida and the Duval County Extension Office for their wisdom and patience as she has slowly learned how to create lush\, exciting garden spaces. Juliet is the “bed head” for both the shade garden in Walter Jones Historical Park and the pineapple garden at Mandarin Garden Club. Succulents’ magical propagation have captured her heart of late\, while struggling with cut flowers is an ongoing adventure. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. Masks are optional for those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 but are recommended to help protect everyone. Those who are unvaccinated should wear masks; the Garden Club appreciates your cooperation. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW
