This immersive experience at the Garden Club of Jacksonville will tantalize your senses and is one you won’t want to miss. \nRhonda Gracie graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor’s degree in architectural studies. She also has a degree in parks and recreation maintenance management from North Carolina State University. She is the former landscape architect for the cities of Clearwater and Miami Beach\, where she has won many awards for notable projects and sustainability efforts. Since 2013\, she has been the horticulturist at the University of North Florida\, where she and her department are responsible for the management of more than 1\,600 acres. She serves on many professional boards and committees and has focused on transforming the campus into a Botanical Garden. Gracie has helped with the implementation of 10 Florida-friendly gold-level certified gardens\, UNF’s Bee Campus USA designation\, and 26 transformational educational garden exhibits. Bringing more plants and greenery inside your home or gardening in your yard or patio can have a dramatic effect on your wellbeing. \nCantrece Jones is the president of Acuity Design Group (ADG). She cultivated her favorite hobby into a new business\, Aura Plant Studio\, where she not only sells beautiful plants but also lends her space to others who don’t have a storefront to allow them to promote their products. Jones currently serves as a member of the American Planning Association’s Jacksonville and Atlanta Chapters. She is an active board member of the Winston Family YMCA\, Jacksonville Humane Society\, Jacksonville Community Land Trust\, the Cathedral District\, and the HCA Market Advisory Board. Additionally\, she conducts marketing strategies and branding workshops for entrepreneurs through the Small Business Administration\, the city of Jacksonville\, Broward County\, and more. Jones has a bachelor’s degree in communications and graphic design from the University of North Florida. She has lived and worked in the Jacksonville area for more than 20 years. Her military upbringing has allowed her to travel and live in many places around the globe. She will discuss the benefits of a rain garden\, as well as a few fundamental build instructions. \nA rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof\, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials\, rain gardens can be a cost-effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies\, song birds\, and other wildlife. \nDaria Wicks is a recently retired pharmaceutical researcher whose career focus has been on wellbeing\, both our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our environment. During the last year to 18 months\, she has worked to identify cost-efficient ways to improve our immediate surroundings and contribute to the wellbeing of our waterways. Be prepared to learn and laugh as we explore the troubles\, joys\, and lessons of loving rare and exotic plants. Guests will also have an opportunity to purchase propagations of plants grown by Mason as well as try his acclaimed brown butter vegan cookies. \n\n		\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\nMason is the owner and operator of Pink Prince Plants\, a Black+Queer-owned cottage rare plant nursery and pop-up bakery founded to create joy during the depths of 2020. He is a Houston native recently transplanted (along with his plants) to Florida by way of Brooklyn. Mason fell in love with exotic plants at first sight. For three years\, he has brought his curiosity\, focus\, and passion to building a collection of more than 200 rare specimens. \nAlong the way\, he’s learned best practices by trial and error. Now he shares those lessons to save you many of those headaches. Mason is also a baker. They can be good fun and extremely successful without blowing the budget—especially in our USDA zone of 9A\, where the propagation is easy! \nJuliet Johnson has killed more plants than the average Floridian. She has learned through expensive experience how to garden far away from her native United Kingdom. She is eternally grateful to the University of Florida and the Duval County Extension Office for their wisdom and patience as she has slowly learned how to create lush\, exciting garden spaces. Juliet is the “bed head” for both the shade garden in Walter Jones Historical Park and the pineapple garden at Mandarin Garden Club. Learn how to grow varieties like shiitake and oyster mushrooms and the seasons when they grow best. \nEat Your Yard Jax is a family-run farm specializing in edible landscape and garden plants and practicing organic principles and sustainable agriculture. The farm uses composting\, vermiculture\, rainwater reclamation\, aquaponics\, chicken production for a manure source\, and mushroom production from waste wood reclamation as part of its sustainable practices. \nArmstrong’s family has lived in North Florida since Florida became a state. They operated a trading post\, post office\, and steamboat stop on the Apalachicola River for almost 100 years. Armstrong grew up on Jacksonville’s westside and worked in several nurseries as a young man. He returned to the nursery business in 2007. After he met the folks at the Beaches Green Market\, he expanded the edible component of his business. He enjoyed sharing the market experience with his children and hearing stories of urban agriculture success—and failure—from customers. After volunteering at the North Florida School of Special Education’s gardens\, Armstrong studied at Growing Power in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, with Will Allen. The training helped Berry Good Farms to grow out of NFSSE’s small garden into the microbusiness training model it is today. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWDuval Audubon Society\, Northeast Florida Sierra Club\, the Ixia Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society\, and the Garden Club of Jacksonville partner for a special Horticulture Corner program with Doug Tallamy of the Homegrown National Park project\, an effort to create 20 million acres of native plantings in yards and communities across the United States. \nThese four organizations are joining together to encourage people in Northeast Florida to sign up their yards for the Homegrown National Park challenge. They will suggest sets of native plants for different conditions\, such as sunny\, shady\, or dry\, and provide handouts with helpful information. Dr. Tallamy will give a presentation by Zoom which will be followed by an in-person introduction to easy to grow native plants with representatives from Duval Audubon\, Ixia Chapter of FNPS\, and Northeast Florida Sierra Club. \nArrive at 5:30 p.m. to visit tables representing each organization and learn how you can get involved. The program begins at 6 p.m. \nNative Plant Sale\nThere will be a native plant sale at the event to help people get started on native plantings in their own yards. \nAbout Doug Tallamy and the Homegrown National Park project\nDr. Tallamy founded Homegrown National Park along with Michelle Alfandari as a grass-roots call to action to regenerate biodiversity\, catalyzing a collective effort of individual homeowners\, property owners\, land managers\, farmers\, and anyone with some soil to start a new habitat by planting native plants and removing most invasive plants. It is the largest cooperative conservation project ever conceived or attempted.“Our National Parks\, no matter how grand in scale are too small and separated from one another to preserve species to the levels needed\,” Tallamy says. “Thus\, the concept for Homegrown National Park\, a bottom-up call-to-action to restore habitat where we live and work\, and to a lesser extent where we farm and graze\, extending national parks to our yards and communities.” \nThe Homegrown National Park website features an interactive map that shows each person’s contribution to planting native by state\, county\, and zip code. You can add your yard to this map! \nDr. Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book “Bringing Nature Home” was awarded the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers’ Association. “Nature’s Best Hope\,” a New York Times Best Seller\, was released in February 2020\, and his latest book “The Nature of Oaks” was released by Timber press in March 2021. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation\, the Tom Dodd Jr. Award of Excellence\, the 2018 AHS B.Y. She is also a member of the Ixia Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society\, Florida Wildflower Foundation\, Herb Society of America\, and the Yucca Circle of the Ribault Garden Club. She has been an avid gardener for many years and has been cultivating native plants in her yard since she moved to Jacksonville in 1999. Willis previously worked as a market manager with CSX and Conrail and as a financial advisor with Ameriprise Financial Services. She has a bachelor’s degree from Regis College in Boston and an MBA from Syracuse University. She specializes in urban beekeeping methods and has been actively involved in the profession since 2018. \nShe and her husband\, Octavious Carr\, cofounded the The Herban Bee. As avid gardeners\, they focus on integrating beekeeping into urban neighborhoods and exposing disadvantaged communities to agriculture. The couple practices their craft mostly in urban areas due to the limited land resources\, a challenge many black farmers face in the United States. \nAn educator and advocate for bee conservation\, Mika attended the University of Florida Bee College and is a member of both the Jacksonville and Nassau County beekeepers associations. As a licensed beekeeper with the state of Florida\, Mika and her husband complete bee removals and relocate distressed and at-risk bees regularly. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. The Ixia Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society adopted Native Park #1 in 2010 as part of Jacksonville’s Friends of the Park program to carry out the park’s original purpose and advance the mission of the Florida Native Plant Society. Ixia Chapter volunteers have spent many Saturdays digging up invasive plants and planting 138 native species to add to the 37 native species.
