SUMMARY:Fun with Flowers: Spring Bouquets
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE YOUR TICKETThis program is being offered at two times: 10 a.m.-noon and 6:30-8:30 p.m. \nJoin Michelle Morgan of Kuhn Flowers to learn how to make fabulous floral arrangements with the bountiful blooms of spring. She will take you step-by-step through the process of creating a gorgeous design\, then provide you the materials to make your own and take it home with you. Use your masterpiece to decorate your home or give it as a gift. \nMichelle Morgan’s floral journey began when she was a young girl studying in the United Kingdom. After seven years of hard work\, she gained eight different government floral qualifications. Michelle then moved on to achieve two of the highest floristry qualifications in Europe. From there\, she started teaching at a local university\, training more than 4\,000 students at all levels and helping them gain some of the most prestigious floral qualifications in Europe. Michelle has been lucky to work with some of the best floral designers and educators across Europe. She’s even had the privilege of designing florals for the British royal family and more recently the president of the United States. \nIn 2008\, Michelle and her family made the move to the United States. She bought a busy flower store\, and Michelle’s love for the industry only grew. Over the next few years\, Michelle worked for a major floral wholesaler\, overseeing millions of dollars in sales. In 2013\, she was inducted into AIFD\, making her one of the few people in the world with the most prestigious floristry qualifications from both Europe and the U.S. \nIn 2016\, Michelle and her husband bought Kuhn Flowers—one of the largest flower stores in the United States. Since then\, Michelle has opened three more stores and employs more than 65 full-time employees. She credits her success to her passion for teaching and learning and encourages people to step out of their comfort zone and follow their floral dreams. \nFun with Flowers is an educational outreach program that is open to the public. SUMMARY:Combined Circles: An Artist's Exploration
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWREGISTRATION BEGINS JANUARY 2\, 2025 \nJoin visual artist Kathy Stark for a special visual presentation about Jacksonville’s parks and preserves featured in her book\, “The Wilderness of North Florida’s Parks” and her recent series of WPA-era-inspired posters. She will share aspects most people don’t know\, personal tips\, and interesting insights into her paintings. Kathy’s book will also be available to purchase\, and she will sign copies after the program. \nA Jacksonville native and resident\, Kathy Stark specializes in watercolor and oil painting. Her favorite subject matter is her natural Florida surroundings\, which she explores by hiking\, kayaking\, canoeing\, mountain biking\, and dog walking. She created a series of large even monumental watercolors of her area’s amazing wild park system for her book and traveling exhibit titled “The Wilderness of North Florida’s Parks.” A unique blend of art and education\, the family-friendly book and exhibit serves as a tribute and guide to the great unspoiled stretches of the North Florida region. Kathy’s work has been collected both privately and corporately and has been shown in museums and galleries in Northeast Florida and beyond. \nKathy attended the Bartram School\, now part of the Bolles School. In 1985\, she graduated from Furman University with a BA in studio arts and then attended the University of Florida for post-baccalaureate studies. \nFollowing college\, Kathy traveled for four years in the Southeast working as set designer\, art director\, and production illustrator for the motion picture industry. Kathy later painted\, sculpted\, and designed for a company creating environments for entertainment attractions\, museums\, and zoos. Twenty years ago\, Kathy resumed her full-time pursuit as a professional fine artist. Breaking out from her long preferred medium of oils\, she began exploring watercolors for the first time since college and has a newfound energy and enthusiasm with this medium. \nCombined Circles is an occasional program that allows members of garden circles to meet at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for fellowship and camaraderie. \nThe Garden Club appreciates all Circle members registering for this event\, so we know how many chairs and refreshments to provide. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Light My Fire
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\n\nREGISTRATIONS BEGIN OCTOBER 1\, 2024 \nNorth Florida Land Trust (NFLT) has protected more than 38\,000 acres\, and through land stewardship restores and maintains the more than 14\,000 acres it manages\, creating ideal habitats benefiting both wildlife and vegetation. Using “prescribed burns\,” NFLT can optimally maintain these land tracts for the benefit of conservation. \nA prescribed burn is a planned fire used to meet land management objectives. The “prescription” is a set of conditions that considers the safety of the public and fire staff\, weather\, and probability of meeting the burn objectives. Every fire has a prescription prepared in advance which describes its objectives\, fuels\, size\, the precise environmental conditions under which it will burn\, and conditions under which it may be suppressed. \nNFLT has a dedicated expert stewardship team that manages such prescribed burns. Hear from NFLT CEO Allison DeFoor and Land Stewardship Director Rianna Elliott about the ways in which precious land in North Florida is protected and managed. \nThe Rev. Cn. Allison DeFoor is a seventh-generation Floridian who serves as North Florida Land Trust president and CEO. Dr. DeFoor has been actively engaged in conservation as a trustee of the Florida Audubon Society\, the Florida Land Trust Association\, and 1\,000 Friends of Florida. In addition\, he was Florida’s Everglades Czar\, and in 2014\, he co-chaired the passage of Amendment 1\, which passed with 70 percent of the vote in Florida and authorized the most significant land protection efforts in world history. \nDeFoor is also an Episcopal priest who has served as Canon to the Ordinary to the Bishop of the Diocese of Florida. Dr. DeFoor\, who has degrees in law\, criminology\, and theology\, previously served parishes in four prisons around Tallahassee and was an assistant at Grace Mission\, an inner-city mission. \nHis background in criminal justice includes having been a prosecutor\, public defender\, judge\, and the elected Sheriff of Monroe County. \nIn addition\, Dr. DeFoor served as a law professor at the University of Miami\, a member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar\, and a trustee of numerous boards\, including the Florida Chamber Foundation\, Florida Historical Society\, Associated Industries of Florida\, and Florida Tax Watch. In 1990\, Dr. DeFoor ran for Lieutenant Governor of Florida as Governor Bob Martinez’s running mate. Upon moving to Jacksonville in 2015\, he was invited twice to become a member of The Florida Times-Union newspaper editorial board. In Jacksonville\, he has served on the boards of Operation New Hope\, the Jacksonville Historical Society\, Memorial Park Association\, and the FSCJ Foundation. Dr. DeFoor recently graduated from the Nonprofit Executive Program (NPEP) at the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State University and he currently serves as a trustee with the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. \n\nRianna Elliott joined NFLT in 2021 and serves as the director of land wtewardship. She oversees the stewardship department and will be responsible for the management\, restoration and maintenance of NFLT’s preserves and conservation easements. Her duties include a supervisory role of the stewardship department and the direct implementation of certain program areas. She also serves on the leadership team and contributes to the nonprofit’s organizational development and strategic decision-making. \nRianna comes to NFLT with more than a decade of experience with the Florida Park Service. As a park services specialist\, she focused most of her energy on resource management and prescribed fire. Over time\, she achieved her certified prescribed burn manager status as well as other certifications to enable her to better preserve the lands she was charged with restoring and protecting. She has also assisted multiple agencies with prescribed fire through trainings and knowledge exchanges over the years. Prior to her work with Florida Park Service\, Rianna spent several years with a non-profit organization working with at-risk youth. \n\nThe program is free and open to the public\, but registration is required so the Garden Club knows how many chairs to provide.
