SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Light My Fire
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\n\nREGISTRATIONS BEGIN OCTOBER 1\, 2024 \nNorth Florida Land Trust (NFLT) has protected more than 38\,000 acres\, and through land stewardship restores and maintains the more than 14\,000 acres it manages\, creating ideal habitats benefiting both wildlife and vegetation. Using “prescribed burns\,” NFLT can optimally maintain these land tracts for the benefit of conservation. \nA prescribed burn is a planned fire used to meet land management objectives. The “prescription” is a set of conditions that considers the safety of the public and fire staff\, weather\, and probability of meeting the burn objectives. Every fire has a prescription prepared in advance which describes its objectives\, fuels\, size\, the precise environmental conditions under which it will burn\, and conditions under which it may be suppressed. \nNFLT has a dedicated expert stewardship team that manages such prescribed burns. Hear from NFLT CEO Allison DeFoor and Land Stewardship Director Rianna Elliott about the ways in which precious land in North Florida is protected and managed. \nThe Rev. Cn. Allison DeFoor is a seventh-generation Floridian who serves as North Florida Land Trust president and CEO. Dr. DeFoor has been actively engaged in conservation as a trustee of the Florida Audubon Society\, the Florida Land Trust Association\, and 1\,000 Friends of Florida. In addition\, he was Florida’s Everglades Czar\, and in 2014\, he co-chaired the passage of Amendment 1\, which passed with 70 percent of the vote in Florida and authorized the most significant land protection efforts in world history. \nDeFoor is also an Episcopal priest who has served as Canon to the Ordinary to the Bishop of the Diocese of Florida. Dr. DeFoor\, who has degrees in law\, criminology\, and theology\, previously served parishes in four prisons around Tallahassee and was an assistant at Grace Mission\, an inner-city mission. \nHis background in criminal justice includes having been a prosecutor\, public defender\, judge\, and the elected Sheriff of Monroe County. \nIn addition\, Dr. DeFoor served as a law professor at the University of Miami\, a member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar\, and a trustee of numerous boards\, including the Florida Chamber Foundation\, Florida Historical Society\, Associated Industries of Florida\, and Florida Tax Watch. In 1990\, Dr. DeFoor ran for Lieutenant Governor of Florida as Governor Bob Martinez’s running mate. Upon moving to Jacksonville in 2015\, he was invited twice to become a member of The Florida Times-Union newspaper editorial board. In Jacksonville\, he has served on the boards of Operation New Hope\, the Jacksonville Historical Society\, Memorial Park Association\, and the FSCJ Foundation. Dr. DeFoor recently graduated from the Nonprofit Executive Program (NPEP) at the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State University and he currently serves as a trustee with the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. \n\nRianna Elliott joined NFLT in 2021 and serves as the director of land wtewardship. She oversees the stewardship department and will be responsible for the management\, restoration and maintenance of NFLT’s preserves and conservation easements. Her duties include a supervisory role of the stewardship department and the direct implementation of certain program areas. She also serves on the leadership team and contributes to the nonprofit’s organizational development and strategic decision-making. \nRianna comes to NFLT with more than a decade of experience with the Florida Park Service. As a park services specialist\, she focused most of her energy on resource management and prescribed fire. Over time\, she achieved her certified prescribed burn manager status as well as other certifications to enable her to better preserve the lands she was charged with restoring and protecting. She has also assisted multiple agencies with prescribed fire through trainings and knowledge exchanges over the years. Prior to her work with Florida Park Service\, Rianna spent several years with a non-profit organization working with at-risk youth. \n\nThe program is free and open to the public\, but registration is required so the Garden Club knows how many chairs to provide. SUMMARY:Designer of Distinction: Andy Hopper
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE YOUR TICKETJoin Andy Hopper (AIFD\, CFD) for an in-depth presentation and floral demonstration called “Bringing Out the Designer in You.” \nAndy will construct and share several designs that reflect the wide range of work he does with Blooms Design Studio by H-E-B in Texas and as a professional consultant throughout the world. \nFrom the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena to a fashionable high-profile wedding in Bogota\, Columbia\, to State dinners for four presidents to the Philadelphia Flower Show\, Andy Hopper has achieved great heights in the event design world. \nA passion for design and creativity sparked at an early age for Andy\, when he was a young child creating tablescapes in his grandmother’s backyard. Andy’s formative years were immersed in art lessons and travels and that propelled him onto the University of Montevallo in Alabama\, where he began working towards his interior design degree. While in college\, he pursued his love of design through art history classes and rigorous interiors courses. From Montevallo to Milan was where Andy spent time and creative energy working for such international companies as Hugo Boss\, where he was a makeup artist for glossy magazine shoots and glamorous photography catalogs. \nAndy came back home to Alabama in the early 2000s and quickly began to create a brand for himself. Under Andy’s leadership\, he grew KG Designs from a small design company into a national powerhouse by staying ahead of trend while going above and beyond for his clients. \nIn 2016\, H-E-B reached out to him to start a new concept for the company in Houston. Andy fostered the Blooms Design Studio by H-E-B concept and made it synonymous for great customer service and beautiful designs. In 2019\, he was installed as an executive in San Antonio in the Blooms Department of H-E-B; his role encompasses product design/development\, floral education\, and new business development. \nThe Designer of Distinction is an annual fundraising event that presents an expert in the field of floral design demonstrating and discussing his work. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Rain Gardens
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Daria Wicks as she shares ways to rescue the rain by creating a beautiful\, beneficial garden that purifies toxic runoff. She will discuss the benefits of a rain garden\, as well as a few fundamental build instructions. \nA rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof\, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials\, rain gardens can be a cost-effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies\, song birds\, and other wildlife. \nDaria Wicks is a recently retired pharmaceutical researcher whose career focus has been on wellbeing\, both our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our environment. During the last year to 18 months\, she has worked to identify cost-efficient ways to improve our immediate surroundings and contribute to the wellbeing of our waterways. Through this work\, she became interested in rain gardens as a way to enhance our surroundings and contribute to the improvement of our waterways. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Let It Rain
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Master Gardener Volunteer Evie Pankok to learn the who\, what\, why\, when\, where\, and how of rain barrels.
