SUMMARY:Designer of Distinction: Andy Hopper
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE YOUR TICKETJoin Andy Hopper (AIFD\, CFD) for an in-depth presentation and floral demonstration called “Bringing Out the Designer in You.” \nAndy will construct and share several designs that reflect the wide range of work he does with Blooms Design Studio by H-E-B in Texas and as a professional consultant throughout the world. \nFrom the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena to a fashionable high-profile wedding in Bogota\, Columbia\, to State dinners for four presidents to the Philadelphia Flower Show\, Andy Hopper has achieved great heights in the event design world. \nA passion for design and creativity sparked at an early age for Andy\, when he was a young child creating tablescapes in his grandmother’s backyard. Andy’s formative years were immersed in art lessons and travels and that propelled him onto the University of Montevallo in Alabama\, where he began working towards his interior design degree. While in college\, he pursued his love of design through art history classes and rigorous interiors courses. From Montevallo to Milan was where Andy spent time and creative energy working for such international companies as Hugo Boss\, where he was a makeup artist for glossy magazine shoots and glamorous photography catalogs. \nAndy came back home to Alabama in the early 2000s and quickly began to create a brand for himself. Countless hours and networking helped him expand a loyal clientele base that trusted him with major life events. In 2006\, Andy received his national certification of floral design with AIFD (American Institute of Floral Design) due to his never-ending desire to solidify his knowledge and experience in the ever-changing world of event design and the art of floral. Under Andy’s leadership\, he grew KG Designs from a small design company into a national powerhouse by staying ahead of trend while going above and beyond for his clients. \nIn 2016\, H-E-B reached out to him to start a new concept for the company in Houston. Andy fostered the Blooms Design Studio by H-E-B concept and made it synonymous for great customer service and beautiful designs. In 2019\, he was installed as an executive in San Antonio in the Blooms Department of H-E-B; his role encompasses product design/development\, floral education\, and new business development. \nThe Designer of Distinction is an annual fundraising event that presents an expert in the field of floral design demonstrating and discussing his work. The presentation will be followed by a raffle of his arrangements and a three-course catered lunch. \nBecome a member today and get a BIG discount! \nCircle members\nAll Garden Club circle members will automatically be seated with their circles. If you have questions\, please call 904-355-4224 or email info@gardenclubjax.org. \nBallroom tickets\n\n$60 for Garden Club members (plus up to three guests)\n$85 for nonmembers\n\nMenu\nCatering by Chriss will serve a three-course lunch: \n\nSalad: Fresh spring salad mix topped with citrus segments and dressed with fresh citrus olive oil\, served with fresh bread and butter.\nEntree choices: Smoked pork loin or crab cake topped with a house-made smoked applesauce glaze served over garlic and parmesan mashed potatoes with a fresh bundle of roasted vegetables. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Rain Gardens
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Daria Wicks as she shares ways to rescue the rain by creating a beautiful\, beneficial garden that purifies toxic runoff. She will discuss the benefits of a rain garden\, as well as a few fundamental build instructions. \nA rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof\, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground. Planted with grasses and flowering perennials\, rain gardens can be a cost-effective and beautiful way to reduce runoff from your property. Rain gardens can also help filter out pollutants in runoff and provide food and shelter for butterflies\, song birds\, and other wildlife. \nDaria Wicks is a recently retired pharmaceutical researcher whose career focus has been on wellbeing\, both our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of our environment. During the last year to 18 months\, she has worked to identify cost-efficient ways to improve our immediate surroundings and contribute to the wellbeing of our waterways. Through this work\, she became interested in rain gardens as a way to enhance our surroundings and contribute to the improvement of our waterways. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Let It Rain
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Master Gardener Volunteer Evie Pankok to learn the who\, what\, why\, when\, where\, and how of rain barrels. Rain barrels are a great way to reduce stormwater runoff and to save water for a dry spell. \nRain barrels capture water and hold it for later use such as on lawns\, gardens\, or indoor plants. Collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It’s a great way to conserve water\, and it’s free water for use in your landscape. \nEvie will provide guidance on how to build your own rain barrel with some basic supplies and a few simple steps. \nEvie Pankok is a master gardener volunteer in Duval County whose specialty is environmentally friendly landscapes. She recently retired from the Duval County Extension Office where she served many years as a horticulture agent and then as a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program assistant. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Throwing Shade
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWIf you think nothing pretty grows in the shade\, you’re playing the wrong game. Join Master Gardener Juliet Johnson as she explains how color\, texture\, and movement can delight the eye in a shade garden while offering respite to a weary soul. SUMMARY:Horticulture Corner: Mad for Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOWJoin Tim Armstrong of Eat Your Yard Jax as he empowers you to grow your own backyard mushrooms. Armstrong has studied the varieties that grow best in Northeast Florida and shares his extensive experience gained from training programs around the country. Learn how to grow varieties like shiitake and oyster mushrooms and the seasons when they grow best. \nEat Your Yard Jax is a family-run farm specializing in edible landscape and garden plants and practicing organic principles and sustainable agriculture. The farm uses composting\, vermiculture\, rainwater reclamation\, aquaponics\, chicken production for a manure source\, and mushroom production from waste wood reclamation as part of its sustainable practices. \nArmstrong’s family has lived in North Florida since Florida became a state. They operated a trading post\, post office\, and steamboat stop on the Apalachicola River for almost 100 years. Armstrong grew up on Jacksonville’s westside and worked in several nurseries as a young man. He returned to the nursery business in 2007. After he met the folks at the Beaches Green Market\, he expanded the edible component of his business. He enjoyed sharing the market experience with his children and hearing stories of urban agriculture success—and failure—from customers. After volunteering at the North Florida School of Special Education’s gardens\, Armstrong studied at Growing Power in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, with Will Allen. The training helped Berry Good Farms to grow out of NFSSE’s small garden into the microbusiness training model it is today. \nThis program will be offered in-person at the Garden Club and simultaneously on Zoom. Masks are optional for those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 but are recommended to help protect everyone. Those who are unvaccinated should wear masks; the Garden Club appreciates your cooperation. \nThe program is free and open to the public. \nREGISTER NOW
