Joshua Brown of the North Florida Bonsai Club spoke at Horticulture Corner: Bonsai! on May 3.

He presented a primer on bonsai, the art of nature in miniature. The art form originated in China and has existed for more than 1,000 years. Combining horticulture and artistic principles, the goal is to design a containerized tree that replicates the natural environment.

Brown saw his first bonsai in the early 2000s and signed up for a class almost immediately. A hobby quickly progressed to a passion when he moved to Florida 15 years ago. He has since held every board position within the North Florida Bonsai Club, had trees exhibited in multiple state conventions, and had a tree displayed at the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival. He specializes in deciduous and broadleaf trees with more than 200 bonsai in his personal collection.
